Post #3: Theme - Open until Wednesday, Dec. 3rd

Maintaining your character’s voice, express your novel’s theme (a statement that the author is making about the subject of the novel).  Keep in mind that a theme is “universal”, meaning that it is not plot-specific but can be applied to life in general.

·         Post = What is the author’s message? What are your character’s thoughts about how he or she has changed (for the better or worse)?  What lessons has he or she learned?

·         Response = React to another character’s (classmate’s) post in your own character’s voice.  Does the other novel’s message apply to your character at all?  If so, how?  If not, why?  Provide a detail from your novel to support your response.

Don’t forget to sign your character’s name and book title to your post and response.

  1. Hazel has obviously changed the way I look at life. She's not only changed the way I look at life but the way I live my life. I've learned just from being with her that love is meant to be whether it ends in a bad way or a good way. The main thing though is to find love, don't let your fears of the future keep you from loving someone else, don't let the fear of dying in my case keep me from giving Hazel Grace my whole heart unconditionally. Yours, Augustus Waters; The Fault in Our Stars.

    1. I have a similar situation. Ever since I met Four, things have become very different. If I hadn't have known him as well, I probably would have died the night some other initiates attacked me. Even though I like to spend time with him, it has hard to spend time with him, because of the fact that he is my instructor. I am afraid of the future, because there is still the threat of dying while in training. He even told me his biggest secret.

    2. I once thought after I let my boyfreind go to the prom with carrie that everything would be fine for her from then on and that everything would be fine. From what I heard it did...at least for a little while but now the person I loved is gone and carrie is dead. It's odd how life works out like that ain't it.

    2. That is how Mia is to me. she lets me see the positive things in life after all i see is the negative. She showed me that things work out in the end after you cant think of a possible way of how they could.

  3. I have learned that decisions can affect your entire life. If I hadn't decided to choose Dauntless, my life would be entirely different. If I would have chose Abnegation, I would have a more simple life. On the other hand, if I chose Abnegation, I would not have met Four.

    1. Our situations are in some way the same. If I hadn't explained the metaphor to Hazel, she probably would've kicked me to the curb. Therefore, I'm glad I did because I've had the best times of my life with her. - Augustus Waters; The Fault in Our Stars.

    3. I feel the same way. Before I was planning on dropping everything and just leaving Easton completely, but I didn't, and I wouldn't be where I am now if I would've left.

  5. I have learned that there are dark times along the way but in the end everything turns out okay. Since everyone wonders why i went through the dark time its because of Mia. We tried to have a long distance relationship but it didn't work out and i didn't want to do anything anymore. But i went to one of Mia's concerts and she saw me and then we went to dinner and it was like we never were apart and everything worked out in the end.

    2. I went through dark times as well but my dark times are a bit different. Mine have been my failures that i have had. Yet, those failures helped me obtain my goals. - Bogey Million Dollar Putt

    3. I have been through dark times too. Don't take anything in life for granted because it can change in an instant like it did with Mia and the long distance relationship

  6. I learned to make sure you don't hide who you truly are and to change for the better or the worse if you wan to.I changed from a quiet girl to a great confident girl. She changed for the better because she is stronger now than ever. They learned how to grow up fast and how to face her fears

  8. Through some terrible things that have happened at prom night I have learned that if you bully someone it will end badly.I have changed as I won't forget the destruction that Carrie had caused when she had gone crazy. So you should never ever bully someone.

  9. The authors message was that if you want to do something or you have a goal you are trying to reach, it can be achieved through determination and hard work. Bogey showed that when he won a golf tournament as he is permanently blind.

    1. Your friend Bogey is like my father with me. He teaches me values that will help me out all through life. The advice my father gives me to be honest with everybody could help you out to. I will always remember now that hard work and determination achieve your goals.

  10. I have learned that everyone has obstacles to overcome but once you concur them you will be stronger and better as a person. Like how i broke my leg from a fall but i got back up and continued with my quest.

  11. So, I've learned to not take the easy way out of things. If you challenge yourself, or the problem then you just might get rewarded later on in life, or even sooner then you think. Another thing I've learned is to not assume things before you actually know whats going on. That's what I did with my boyfriend Josh, but comes to find out, Cheyenne (remember her?) she drugged him but when I first seen what was going on I thought he was cheating on me. So just don't assume, Investigate.

    1. I understand completely. When Peeta was working with the careers I had no clue what was going on. I thought he turned his back on me and he was my enemy. It turned out however, that he was actually trying to help me the entire time.

  12. Sometimes we dont understand the faults we make.when i moved to Wisconsin i was trying to change and understand things around me. no one really understood me and my parents thought there was something wrong with me,but in the end i started to take everything in and now i understand.

    1. I can relate to you in a similar way. My parents thought there was something wrong with me as well. They thought I was depressed, because I didnt act the same way as other people. I was the only one who truly understood the purpose of why I did the things I did. I tried to step out of my comfort zone by going to a support group my doctor had recommended, and it actually worked. The group worked so much to the point where I could say it changed my life in ways I never imagined. I couldnt have been more coherent in that phase of my life.

  13. The message is that "pain demands to be felt". Even though my love has died I'm so thankful for meeting him, every minute spent with Augustus has changed me for the better, I don't regret anything. Now I know to take risks and not to always stay on the safe side because you never know whenever it could end, especially like how Augustus died. It was so sudden, so never take anything for granted and live in the moment.

  14. I've learned that honesty is the best policy. My father has taught me that you have to be honest to others to gain respect. That's how he go to be the top mob boss in our city. My farther tells me to stay honest with people in order to establish a friendship and trust. These values will help me out greatly with my girlfriend and my future.

  15. Don't give up. When Prim was reaped and I took her place, I had no hope of making it. I tried to lie and put on a brave face for mom, Prim, and Gale but in all honesty I knew I wouldn't make it. How could I? But in the end Peeta and i were the two victors of the hunger games.

  17. There comes a time in everyones life where we don`t know whether we did something right or wrong. Augustus`s death had me very upset, not only did I lose a person I truly cared for, I also lost my best friend. There`s not a day that goes by where I don`t think about him. I wonder how our lifes would have been if he hadnt died, but I guess thats life. A lesson I learned from this whole experience was "Pain demands to be felt". We need to overcome difficult times in order to receive prosperity and happiness. Those bad moments I had would become lessons for me in the near future. I hope he`s in a better place :)

  19. I have realized one main thing through this journey. It is that life can change in a moment and you can't take for granted what you have in the world because you never know when it's going to be gone. I am definitely going to look at life different and not take anything for granted.
