Post #1: Characterization - Open until Friday, Nov. 7th

Get inside your protagonist’s skin and write both your post and response in his or her voice (1st person).

  • Post = Show your understanding of indirect characterization by describing an event or relationship in a way that reveals your character’s personality through speech, thought, actions, appearance, or effect on others.  Within the same post, show your understanding of direct characterization by specifically describing (and naming) your novel’s antagonist.  Focus on the characters, not the plot!

  • Response = React to another character’s (classmate’s) post in your own character’s voice by comparing or contrasting an experience or feeling they have with your own experiences or feelings.  Be specific and provide details.  Depending on the type of person your character is, you may side with the other post’s protagonist or antagonist.
Don’t forget to sign your character’s name and book title to your post and response.

  1. Honest to God, Lennie an’ me ain’t never gonna be able to settle down if he don’t learn to keep his gosh darn paws off other people’s stuff. They don’t git Lennie’s jes a big lug with a big heart. Everybody else jes cares bout themselves and their own needs. Sometimes I wonder what that’d be like … I jes gotta keep Lenny outta Curley’s sight. That little punk’s got it out for Lennie.

    1. Look here, George. You’re a nice fella, but you know what you gotta do. Lennie’s jes like a kid and don’t fit into this man’s world. You’ve spent your life lookin’ out fer him, but you’re always gonna be runnin’ to keep one step ahead of trouble. I can tell you from experience that this here ranch is a place where you can make a good name for yourself, make good money, and let loose in town on a Saturday night without any worries. You ain’t gettin’ any younger, George.

  4. I wish i could be at home with my normal life my normal family and my normal boyfriend playing my cello. Watching myself in the hospital feels so weird and i'm so confused. This wasnt supposed to happen to us we were just an average family out for a drive and now my parents are dead my brother is somewhere and i'm here somewhere in between watching myself in the hospital. How am i supposed to deal with this? What am i supposed to do?

    2. I'm not in your situation either but I do have the same thoughts. Ever since my boyfriend disappeared and then ended up dead, Everything's gone downhill at Easton. Sometimes I just wish that I could go home but then I think about how worse gone is than being here. So I kind of gotta just stick through it and stay here.

    3. Hang in there Mia. I know that your strong enough to get through this. Its your decision what to do but just think of all the people that are going to miss you if you let go. Life would suck without you.

  5. On prom night my fellow classmates had elected me and tommy prom king and queen. And then they dumped a bucket of pigs blood all over us.so ran out and then...and then...I decided that they needed to pay.So I used my power to close the doors shut. Then they push it open so I had to slam them shut again this time though one of the people's hands lost a few fingers (its okay though he was being naughty).Next I broke an electrical cable and turned on the sprinklers (the ones on the ceilings to put out fire). They looked so funny flopping like fishes.the fire in their started soon afterwards then before I left I made sure that I broke a gas tank out back so there would be an explosion soon after I left.then I went out to destroy the rest of the naughty town (yes naughty) especially Momma. 6. Today, I was at the group meeting that are held weekly and there's this really cute girl Hazel there. Had to explain the cigarette metaphor to her. It seems like she understands now though. :)

  7. Everyday when I wake up I tell myself I just have to get through another 24 hours. I hate all the interviews I have to sit through. I am asked the same question in everyone. Like why I had a dark time and quit writing music. I know their job is to get under my skin and get answers out of me but I feel like I could scream when that question is brought up. I just dont know what to do anymore..

    1. I have the exact opposite situation. I don't get enough attention from people. I can't look at a mirror for a long amount of time, and I only get to once a month. I should be selfless and not care about myself, according to the rules. I do see where you are coming from, having too much attention would make me nervous as well.

  8. We're supposed to know what to choose. Me, I'm not so sure. The test didn't tell me. The choosing ceremony is tomorrow, and I have to choose then. I am supposed to be selfless, according to my faction. Do I choose to be brave, selfless, intelligent, honest or peaceful? My brother, Caleb, says that we should keep the family in mind. Him being so considerate, he is an obvious abnegation. I should keep the family in mind, but I'm not too sure that I want to be selfless my whole life. It gets boring, not being able to be curious.

  12. An Imperial Affiction is my all time favorite novel. I don`t have any words to describe
how much I enjoy reading it. The author Peter Van Houten thoroughly discusses the concept of cancer. I`ve read the book multiple times, and still find admiration every time I read. Augustus thought me reading this type of book was depressing, considering he`s always optimistic and doesn`t let any obstacle get in his path not even his own amputation. I have a feeling our relationship will last a life time, despite our diagnosis.

    1. I can relate to your situation but in a different way. When I was first diagnosed with my illness I knew it was going to be difficult trying to adapt to things differently than what I was used to.The things I did before wouldve had to be refined to fit my needs. But, those changes soon became normal. I`m not an ordinary person, and it seems as if support group may be helping considering everyone who goes has some sort of illness.

  16. All this Christmas stuff is foolish. Buying gifts nobody will use, receiving gifts that I won't use, purchasing ham no one will ever eat, and sending cards nobody reads, I need a break from all the stress.

  17. I don't know how I'm going to keep me and Darla alive. This winter is so harsh people are dying every single night. They say there trying to protect us, what are they really doing? It infuriates me how the troops think they can control thousands of people, and keep us all locked behind these gates trapped. Darla and I will get out, I'm sure of it because we sure as hell aren't dying in this death camp.

  22. I can't believe this happened. Shes the same age as Prim, who could do something like that? I heard Rue screaming so I ran to help her, when I found her she was trapped in a net. I panicked and cut it to free her. We needed to move. Fast. When I turned around though I saw him. Heartless. A monster. Rues killer. I don't want to talk about it anymore... Just the thought of her dying in my arms is giving me constant nightmares.

  23. I just got back from the golf course, Hunter and his friends challenged me for who can hit a golf ball the furthest, I'm not very competitive but I went ahead and did it. I hit the ball 150 yards to win the challenge. Im glad i won because Hunter has been mean to me for awhile and I think it is because I am blind and he can take advantage of that.

    1. I can relate to that situation because i am small and i get bullied too. Evn tho you probably are smarter then them they still will probably bully you. Try not to worry about it and keep winning those challenges so they will think of you differently!
